Imperial Desert – South Eastern California.
Next to Niland and near the Salton Sea at 35 meters below sea level we reach Slab City. It is a camp set up by rugged trailers, old buses, tents and shelters populated by anyone who has good reasons to escape from ‘reality’.
Once here there was a military base active during World War II, today it is called by its inhabitants as the Last Free Place in America or The City with No Laws, because the government, despite having tried attempts to evacuate the area, here does not exist.
Due to the existing environmental conditions this is perhaps one of the most extreme forms of “choice of life” that we have ever seen. No Electricity, no drinking water and uncomfortableness, the real one.
If you saw Into The Wild, some scenes were shot here, Gianfranco Rosi here shot the documentary “Below Sea Level”. Apart some violent episodes, life in Slab City runs smoothly, there is a library, some community circles, artwork scattered around the area and “The range”, where often live music is played.
The most famous slabber was visionary artist Leonard Knight, who gave birth to the Salvation Mountain. For over twenty years he lived and worked on the small artificial hill at the entrance of the settlement, painting the ‘mountain’ with acrylic colors and verses of the Bible in honor of God.
