We are in an the Short Creek area, on the border between Utah and Arizona, where the villages of Hildale, UT and its sister Colorado City, AZ are located.
Until a few years ago this was the reign of Warren Jeffs, mormon leader of the polygamyst “Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (FLDS). Jeffs claimed himself to be Christ reincarnated, he dictated community rules, organized weddings between underaged girls and elderly members of the community, banned the internet, exiled younger males from the community, forbade women to leave the house if not accompanied, all the girls could not even looking up from the ground except to interact with community members, he controlled the administration of the two towns of Hildale and Colorado City.
A sort of The Handmaid’s Tale, but dramatically real, with the only difference in the color of women’s clothes: blue instead of red.
In 2006 Jeffs was sentenced to life for pedophilia and sexual assault on underage girls whom he considered his wives. Many of the followers still worship him as a prophet and believe he’s a victim of a conspiracy. After his arrest many followers left their homes to go to Texas to join another FLDS community, but many others were evicted to speed up the dispersal of the faithful.
Today Hildale and Colorado City are almost ghost towns, wide streets lined with abandoned houses and with no frames to prevent the return of the old inhabitants. There are almost no traces of the cult, but it could enough to go to the Walmart of Hurricane (the nearest supermarket 25 miles to the west) to bump into some of these women while shopping, strictly accompanied.
