During these years of U.S. cross country traveling, one of the things we understood is that every town, whether it’s true or not, claims of being “the best” in something.
Galena, Illinois
In the case of Galena, Illinois, we are facing the “Best Main Street of the Midwest”. A few miles from the ‘Mighty Mississippi’ and about 200 miles away from Chicago, Galena is one of the favorite destinations for the Windy City weekenders. Galena looks much as it did during the time of the Civil War, although now the historic red brick buildings are home to charming shops, art galleries and restaurants. In fact, more than 85 percent of the buildings of this little town lying on the banks of the Galena River – a tributary of Mississippi – are in the National Register of Historic Places, including the home of its most famous resident, President Ulysses S. Grant.

WHERE TO SLEEP
Finding a place to sleep in Galena is super easy. The town is literally full of charming B&B settled inside historic buildings. We’ve been to Abe’s Springs Street Guesthouse.
In questi anni di viaggi negli USA una delle cose che abbiamo capito è che bene o male ogni paesino, che sia vero oppure no, si vanta di essere “the best” in qualche cosa.
Nel caso di Galena in Illinois ci troviamo di fronte alla “Best Main Street del Midwest”. A pochi chilometri dal ‘mighty Mississippi’ e a circa 300km da Chicago è una delle mete preferite dagli abitanti della Windy City per il weekend. Sebbene oggi gli oltre 100 edifici in mattoni rossi del diciannovesimo secolo che si susseguono lungo la strada principale siano diventati la sede di negozi, ristoranti e gallerie d’arte, arrivare a Galena è come fare un salto indietro ai tempi della Guerra Civile. Infatti oltre l’85 per cento degli edifici di questa città che sorge sulle sponde del Galena River – un affluente del Mississippi – è incluso nel National Register of Historic Places, tra cui la casa del suo residente più famoso, il presidente Ulysses S. Grant.

Noi siamo stati al One Eleven Main per avere un assaggio dei prodotti del Midwest, qui tutti piatti sono rigorosamente realizzati con materia prima coltivata o allevata nella zona.
DOVE DORMIRE
Per dormire a Galena avrete l’imbarazzo della scelta, la cittadina pullula di B&B affascinanti ricavati dalle abitazioni storiche. Noi siamo stati alla Abe’s Springs Street Guesthouse.
