Painted Desert and Petrified Forest

Although we have been through Central-Eastern Arizona more than once, based on the info we had we always skipped this national park because it looked like nothing more than a log fossils deposit, and because, being so close to Route 66, we figured it packed with tourists .

We were totally wrong as it really turned out to be beautiful and uncommon. Petrified Forest National Park is crossed north to south by the Park Road, about 30 mile long, and it’s divided into two areas: the northern part, where you can admire the Painted Desert and the southern area, where you can find the highest concentration of logs fossils scattered in a sci-fi novel landscape.

The park is about 130 miles east of Flagstaff along the Interstate 40 which we recommend to avoid unless you are in a hurry (exit 311). Alternatively, we recommend to use the southern entrance following the US 180.

Painted Desert Petrified Forest

Holbrook, Arizona is the closest town to the entrance, but do not expect anything exciting here.

Pur essendo passati più volte dalle parti dell’Arizona Centro-Orientale abbiamo sempre snobbato questo parco nazionale un po’ perché dalle informazioni raccolte ci era sembrato di capire che fosse nulla di più di un deposito di tronchi fossilizzati, un po’ perché essendo a ridosso della Route 66 lo immaginavamo imballato di turisti.

E sbagliavamo di grosso, perché in realtà si è rivelato bellissimo e poco frequentato. Il Petrified Forest National Park è attraversato da nord a sud dalla Park Road, lunga circa 50 km, ed è diviso in due aree: la parte nord, in cui ammirare il Painted Desert e la parte sud, dove si trova la maggior concentrazione di tronchi fossili sparsi in un paesaggio da romanzo fantascientifico.

Il parco si trova a circa 200 Km a est di Flagstaff lungo la Interstate 40 che consigliamo di evitare a meno che non siate di fretta (uscita 311). In alternativa consigliamo di sfruttare l’ingresso più a sud percorrendo la US 180. Holbrook, è il centro abitato più vicino all’ingresso, ma non aspettatevi nulla di particolarmente entusiasmante.
