The dunes appear in the distance as you approach, crushed by the majesty of the summits of the Sangre de Cristo mountains (13000 ft).
The dunes, up to 800 ft high, extend for miles forming a sandy hill ocean that will leave you as breathless as you were looking a stormy sea. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is in Southern Colorado in the San Luis Valley, a vast arid plain nestled between the San Juan Mountains and the Sangre de Cristos.
For thousand years the waters descending from the mountains deposited sand and gravel in the valley and the drought combined with the strong winds of this area gave birth to this spectacular desert, whose dunes are the highest of North America.
So, park your car and go for a hike diving deeper into the park and try to climb the highest dunes or rent a board at the Great Sand Dunes Oasis just outside the park entrance and have fun surfing the dunes!!!
