Driving along the US 212, from Montana to Wyoming and back to Montana again, it’s easy to understand why it was named “the most beautiful road in America”.
Known also as Beartooth All-American Road, it runs for over 100 miles through some of the most remote and scenic landscapes of the States before reaching the northeast entrance of Yellowstone. The road starts in Red Lodge, a small Montana town on the edge of the Beartooth / Absaroke mountain range.
From Red Lodge, the road ascends across Wyoming with an awesome number of switchbacks before returning to the Big Sky Country ending up in Cooke City on the other side of the Beartooth Pass. Along the way you will see fantastic landscapes, snowy peaks, crystal clear lakes, waterfalls and beautiful valleys as the result of glacial erosion.
At its highest point, the Beartooth Highway reaches 11000 ft above sea level, so it will not just the scenario to cut your breath. Make sure to stop at the Rock Creek Vista Point, for spectacular views over the Canyon Rock Creek and always keep your eyes open to spot wildlife.
After the Beartooth Pass, the highway ends in Cooke City, another sleepy Montana little town with a rich history which is the gateway to Yellowstone National Park.
